Ensuring that workers' voice is heard in politics

Snow Day Pay: Boris Breaks Promise

It's confirmed: Boris Johnson has broken his promise that no London Underground staff would be penalised for being unable to get to work because of the heavy snowfall on 2 February. In answers to questions put to him by Green Party Assembly Member Darren Johnson, the Mayor backs up the unfair actions of London Underground management in every single respect.

Now we know how much a promise from our Tory Mayor is really worth!

Conference: Crisis in Working Class Representation

Venue: Camden Centre, London

I encourage members to register now for the public meeting the RMT has convened to examine the crisis in working class political representation. It will be held in London at the Camden Centre on Saturday 7th November 2009 between 11am and 3pm.

The 2009 RMT Annual General Meeting decided to hold this non-binding and non-resolution based Conference, to discuss with like-minded socialists and trade unionists how best we can promote working class political interests.

RMT Rebuttal of Boris Johnson’s comments on cleaners on the London Underground

The RMT has been advised that Jenny Jones AM pressed Boris Johnson on Wednesday at Mayor’s Question Time that TfL should meet with Tubelines and RMT on the London Living Wage.

He reportedly responded that there were 50 cleaners who were not in receipt of the London Living Wage but that has now been resolved satisfactorily.

Striking RMT Members Backed in Parliament

RMT members were strongly supported in Parliament today when the Labour MP for Hendon, Andrew Dismore MP, used questions to the Leader of the House of Commons to wade into the Mayor and London Underground. Mr Dismore accused them of pulling the rug on the deal reached with RMT negotiators on Tuesday night which would have allowed for the tube strike to be suspended.

The MP's intervention follows the intervention by several London Labour MPs today, former Mayor Ken Livingstone and Assembly members calling for Boris Johnson to agree with direct talks with the RMT.

RMT Affiliates to the Labour Party, But Can Support Other Candidates Too

This is the rule change, passed in 2003, that reaffirmed RMT's affiliation to the Labour but also allowed the union to back other candidates who support the union's policy objectives. The Labour Party expelled RMT as a consequence of the passing of this rule change and RMT's subsequent support for the Scottish Socialist Party.
