RMT determined to defend unfairly sacked representative

Dear Colleagues,

DISMISSAL, GARY CARNEY, TRAIN OPERATOR - LONDON UNDERGROUND (LUL/4/1)

Further to my circular IR/067/21, 11th February 2021, last Friday we heard the appalling news that RMT Rep Gary Carney has been sacked by London Underground. It is our firm belief that the charges laid against Gary were unfair, trumped up and completely unjustified. We also believe that his years of RMT activism have played a substantial part in their decision to dismiss him. A clear indication of this being one hearing officer describing him as a “Trade Union rep who should know better”!

The concerns of Central Line East Branch as well as a report from your Lead officer were considered by the NEC this week and I have been instructed to formally notify LUL that we are now in dispute over this disgraceful sacking of our longstanding RMT rep. The company have been told in no uncertain terms that we will remain in dispute until Brother Carney is reinstated to his substantive role.

As a union we are determined to defend our representative, who has a 20 year unblemished record, and will use any and all means at our disposal to fight for his reinstatement. I have been instructed to convene a meeting of all LUL Train side IR representatives, the lead officer, NEC and national officers to consider our options to ballot members for strike action in this dispute. This meeting is to take place this Friday and the NEC will decide on our next steps once this has taken place.

Branches will be kept informed of developments.
