Protest - Save Whitechapel Ticket Office

From RMT General Secretary Bob Crow

Many of you will be aware that Whitechapel Underground station is undergoing a huge refurbishment, which will see the station serving thousands more customers each year, as a result of the Crossrail project. However, London Underground has announced plans to remove and close the Ticket Office from July 2014, which will also result in the loss of SAMF positions.

Whitechapel is an extremely busy station throughout the day and not just during the peak hours. It will mean an unacceptable service for thousands of customers using the station who rely on the service of a staffed ticket office, many of whom need to access staff support at an open ticket office rather than rely on ticket-issuing machines

We firmly believe that this breaks Mayor Boris Johnson's promise of no ticket office closures, despite pledging to oppose closures before he was elected and that this will now ‘open the floodgates’ to further closures. Having defeated LU’s previous attempts to close ticket offices en mass, this union will not stand by and allow them to be closed. Whilst this closure is just under a year away, your union intends step up our campaign against the planned removal and closure of Whitechapel Ticket Office.

Therefore I urge all members to support this campaign by attending a planned protest at

Whitechapel Station on Monday 15th July 2013 at 08:00 hours.

Additionally please can you sign this petition on the direct link below or via the RMT website at www.rmt.org.uk to tell London Underground that ticket office closures are unacceptable and the public deserves this service.
