RMT Demands Cleaning Services Be Brought Back In House

We note the resolution from the London Transport Regional Council and agree that the union must deal effectively with our members demands and aspirations employed in the cleaner grade. The most effective way for our members concerned to secure decent terms and conditions and social justice in the long term is through industrial trade unionism and rock solid organisation.

We note the imminent publication of the RMT’s Cleaners Charter. This Charter will promote this union’s own vision of public services where ALL WORKERS employed receive a living wage, are employed on proper contracts, have decent secure pensions, full and proper sick pay, holidays, trade union rights and dignity and respect at work.

Further, as well as promoting and demanding improvements to our members terms and conditions the Charter will call for the end to: workplace bullying; contracting-out; agencies; no to zero hours contracts and no use of fingerprinting technologies to book on or off work. We demand that services should be brought back in-house to TfL, London Underground and DLR and that all cleaners are directly employed on proper contracts.

The General Secretary is instructed to publicise amongst our members highlighting and promoting the 2014 charter. We also instruct the General Secretary to call a meeting in the first week of April of all our cleaner reps on Initial, Vinci and Carlisle; this meeting to include AGS Hedley, the Lead Officer and a member of the organising unit and will propose a timetable and plan to build this campaign, recruit to the union and table our demands to the employers.

The General Grades Committee agrees to work with the London Transport Regional Council and the LT cleaners grades committee to pursue our objectives in this matter.
