Strike dates announced; ballot results show depth of anger towards unwarranted dismissal of Brother Carney

23rd April 2021

Dear Colleagues,

DISMISSAL, GARY CARNEY, TRAIN OPERATOR - LONDON UNDERGROUND (LUL/4/1)

I write further to my previous Circular (IR/128/21, 31st March 2021), concerning the above matter. The ballot has concluded, and the result is as follows: -

Are you prepared to take strike action?

  • Look here at the national RMT site to see all RMT ballot results.

Your NEC has met to consider the ballot results and noted that the thresholds for taking strike action have been met at Leytonstone, Loughton, West Ruislip, and White City. The thresholds for Hainault Traincrew Depot were not met.

The results show the depth of anger RMT members have towards the completely unwarranted dismissal of Brother Carney and your NEC applauds members for their determination to have your Representative reinstated.

At a well-attended meeting of your Train Operator Reps from across LUL it was unanimously recommended that a ballot for industrial action of all members who drive passenger trains should be conducted in support of Brother Carney. Your NEC has considered the matter and in accordance with your LUL Train Op Reps recommendation, I have been instructed to conduct a ballot of all LUL Train Operators, Instructor Operators and Night Tube Train Operators. Preparations are underway for the ballot to be carried out.

Your Central Line Train Op Representatives also met to discuss the ballot results, with the determination to correct the injustice was made clear. The consensus from your Lead Officer and Representatives was that strike action should be called on the Central Line on 6th May 2021. Gary has been the victim of a grave injustice and strike action was considered the best chance of securing his reinstatement.

The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and taken the decision to call on all Train Operators, Night Tube Train Operators and Instructor Operators at Leytonstone, Loughton, West Ruislip & White City Traincrew Depots to take strike action by not booking on for any shifts that commence between: -

21:00 hours on Wednesday 5th May 2021 and 20:59 hours on Thursday 6th May 2021.

Your union remains available for further talks with the Company, and I will of course keep you advised of all further developments.

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash
General Secretary
