Clip-On Sunglasses For Spectacle-Wearing Train Operators

This memo from London Underground management, dated 16 July 2009, outlines the arrangements for clip-on sunglasses for drivers who wear specs.

Reminder Of Arrangements For The Issue Of Clip-On Sunglasses To Spectacle-Wearing Train Operators

In 2002, in order to assist spectacle-wearing Train Operators to better manage glare whilst driving, the Trains Health and Safety Council endorsed the issue of clip-on sunglasses. Arrangements were put in place for those spectacle-wearing Train Operators who wanted them, to be issued with free made-to-measure clip-on sunglasses via the Department of Optometry at City University.

The purpose of this memorandum is to remind you that this arrangement is still in place, and that those spectacle-wearing Train Operators who approach you seeking the issue of clip-on sunglasses should be released from their driving duties to attend an appointment at City University. The appointments, which last in the region of 15 minutes each, are available Monday to Friday between 10.00 and 16.00 hours. [Contact details for making appointments provided in full memo.]

The Department of Optometry is a short walk from Old Street tube; (take exit 8 and follow the green line on the pavement to Moorfields Eye Hospital; immediately adjacent to the hospital is Cayton Street; go to the end of Cayton Street and then turn right; the Department of Optometry is found at number 7 –9 Bath Street).

Train Operators will need to take with them the spectacles that they wish to have the clip-ons made for, as these glasses will be measured for the plastic clip-on sunglasses. No eye testing will be undertaken.

It will take in the region of 2 to 3 weeks for the made-to-measure clip-on sunglasses to be produced. They will be posted out by the Department of Optometry to the address provided by the Train Operator. Train Operators will not be required to reattend the Deparment of Optometry unless experiencing problems with the clip-on sunglasses, in these case an additional appointment should be made.

It should be noted that the issue of clip-on sunglasses is not mandatory for Train Operators who wear spectacles, and the above arrangements are only for those spectacle-wearing Train Operators who wish to be issued with clip-on sunglasses.

Your continued support in making this process work as smoothly as possible is appreciated.
