Proposed RMT rule changes

As you will probably know, RMT will be holding a Special General Meeting in early November, which will discuss four rule changes submitted by branches. All these rule changes seek to improve our union's democracy, as follows:

- to extend the time available to branches to submit amendments to resolutions to the union's AGM - to ensure that during disputes, the union's Executive considers the views of a strike committee elected by and from the striking members - to create a larger, more diverse and representative Annual General Meeting - to cut the from five years to three years the length of membership before a member can stand to be a delegate to the AGM (this was originally submitted as a cut to two years, but an amendment changing this to three has been submitted with the support of many of the original proposing branches).

On behalf of the branches which submitted these proposals, we would like to see a wide debate in the run-up to the SGM, and hope to convince a majority of delegates to back them. To this end, we are calling a meeting on Saturday 19 September, from 11am at the Exmouth Arms, Star Cross Street, near Euston station, London. The meeting will discuss the case for extending union democracy; look at our proposals in detail; and plan our efforts to explain the proposals and convince RMT members, branches and delegates to support them.

We hope that you and/or other members of your branch will be able to attend.

Yours in solidarity

Janine Booth (Stratford no.1 branch), Yvonne Duncan (Secretary, Stratford no.1 branch), Ed Shine (Secretary, East London Rail branch), Vaughan Thomas (Chair, Central Line West branch), Ross Marshall (Central Line West branch), Paul Jackson (Secretary, LU Engineering branch), Paul Rutland (Chair, TfL no.1 branch)
