Use of Fingerprint Machines and Vehicle Transport - Emcor Rail (LU Contract)

RMT General Grades Committee decision:

That we note the resolution from our LU Engineering branch and the report from our Regional Organiser, and our members’ strong objection to Emcor Rail’s attempt to undermine their civil liberties by using fingerprint technology for booking in and out and surveillance of our members by vehicle trackers.

As requested by the branch, we instruct the General Secretary to urgently write to this company, demanding that it withdraws its threat to introduce fingerprint technology for any uses and reaches agreement over the use of vehicle trackers with this union within seven days.

Should the company fail to do so, we instruct the General Secretary to organise a ballot for action short of strike of our affect members, our intention being that once a ballot mandate is obtained, we will instruct our members to refuse to participate in the use of these technologies.

We further instruct the General Secretary to obtain and place in front of us a summary report showing which companies have attempted to introduce such practices, and what was the outcome of their attempts to do so.

What is a National Executive Committee decision?

This article is an 'executive decision' which has been written by the RMT National Executive Committee. The National Executive is the union's governing body in between AGMs. Its decisions set out what the union will do on a particular issue.

These decisions can often be brief, and may be one of several passed over a period of time. To get a better understanding or find out more information about what the RMT is doing, speak to your rep or attend your branch or Regional Council meeting.
