Tube Job Cuts Hit London Terror Targets

IN A NEW analysis of the London Underground station job cuts plans RMT has revealed that major terrorist targets are right in the front line of the proposed reductions in staffing numbers.

Bank of England (Bank/Monument) 28%

Canada Square (Canary Wharf) 25%

London’s Busiest Station Victoria 19%

Euro-star (Kings Cross)17%

Parliament (Westminster) 16%

Trafalgar Square (Charring Cross) 11%

Out of 98 Stations in the Zone 1 and Zone 2 Area RMT has looked at, the station staffing numbers on a Monday morning, with staff duty times starting before the end of the peak at 0930, has found:

Only 1 (Stratford) has an increase in staff.

25 have no change.

72 Stations Lose operational Staff.

Average Staff Decrease is 17%.

Worst include Baker Street -29%, Oxford Circus -42%, Marble Arch -57% and Highgate -57%.

Every single Zone one Station with the exception on Lancaster Gate, Covent Garden, Angel, Old Street and Barbican loses staff.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said:

“At a time of heightened terrorist alert it is gross negligence on the part of LUL to be hacking back the numbers of station based staff at key targets like Canary Wharf, Parliament and the Bank of England.

“The 7/7 inquiry has shown that those very same staff played a vital and heroic role in that emergency situation and taking them out will clearly compromise the ability of the Underground to identify terrorist threats, safely evacuate stations and deal with the aftermath of any incident.

“This is yet more evidence reinforcing the safety case against LU’s cuts plans and we repeat our call for that cuts process to be brought to an immediate halt and for discussions on a long term, safe and secure future for the tube to begin.”
