RMT Young Members push Union Debate to TUC Congress

In December 2009, RMT young members in Central Line West Branch submitted a motion to the 2009 Young Members conference demanding the TUC allow motions from its young member’s conference to be debated at congress. Currently "statements" are agreed and the ratified by the TUC general Council which is appalling and stops young people getting involved in TUC democracy.

The RMT Young members Conference passed this motion and forwarded to the RMT AGM for ratification. At the RMT AGM Bro Gwyn Williams, representing young members successfully argued that it should be sent to TUC congress as one of the 2 motions the RMT are allowed to submit.

This is a great moment for the Young member’s conference and for Central Line West Branch, and proves that issues debated at branches can make it to the ultimate stage for motions-the TUC. It is also thought this is the first time a motion from a grades conference has made it to the TUC, proving that things can change if you want them to.

TUC Congress is screened live on BBC Parliament Monday 14th-Thursday 17th September
