What is a National Executive Committee decision?

This article is an 'executive decision' which has been written by the RMT National Executive Committee. The National Executive is the union's governing body in between AGMs. Its decisions set out what the union will do on a particular issue.

These decisions can often be brief, and may be one of several passed over a period of time. To get a better understanding or find out more information about what the RMT is doing, speak to your rep or attend your branch or Regional Council meeting.

RMT secures ABM jobs victory, but fight goes on

SUBJECT: STAFFING LEVELS – ABM (LONDON UNDERGROUND CONTRACT)

That we note the report from our Lead Officer that the union is in receipt of a letter from ABM that now clarifies the headcount on the LUL contract; stating that the headcount is 2650, on top of their assurances that there will be no redundancies or job cuts.

This is in light of ABM’s previous assertions to our Lead Officer and cleaning reps at a meeting with ABM last October when the company advised that going forward the contract would have a headcount of approx 2100. Our team countered by stating that the RMT had been given the figure of approx 2800 at the time of convergence of all 3 previous contracts into one.

From then till now ABM have attempted to dispute this figure of 2800 and given all kinds of excuses. When we raised it with TFL and the Mayor they pointed the finger to ABM.

It is clear that out constant campaigning etc on this matter has shifted the company to forcing them to put back approx 550 positions/ jobs.

Utmost commendations to our cleaning reps, Cleaning Grades Committee and Lead Officer!

We still have many issues on this contract:

  • No staff travel
  • No proper sick pay
  • No TfL pension
  • Only London living wage

Our activities on this contract are relentless and we are growing. We have a long way to go and of course ideally it would be all in house.

This is a victory to celebrate; the struggle goes on and we never give up!
