RMT Members on Employers' 'Blacklist'

The current issue of "Tribune" reveals that alongside UCATT and Unite members, members of RMT were also victims of the construction industry blacklist.

Officials from the Information Commissioner's Office raided the premises of the Consulting Association in Droitwich in February and found files on over 3,000 building workers which that body kept so that they could vet workers for construction firms.

RMT official Steve Hedley has obtained a 15 page file on himself, detailing how he was sacked from working on the Channel tunnel. After that, he could not obtain work for three months.

He told "Tribune": “There is also reference to a general RMT file and other individual RMT members have received their files.”

The first employment tribunal hearings arising from the blacklisting scandal are to reach court soon. An initial case management discussion takes place on November 24 in Manchester. This will help decide how the hearings are to be handled. There is to be a demonstration to coincide with the hearing.
