Resolution: Teenage Pregnancy

This resolution, submitted by LU Engineering Branch, was passed unanimously by RMT Women's Conference 2009.

That this Conference believes that insufficient emphasis is given to the responsibilities of men and boys when “teenage” pregnancy is criticised in the media and by politicians. The frequently heard opinion that women deliberately get pregnant to obtain housing, never mentions that housing may be an advantage to the male partner as well. We ask that RMT initiates research, using appropriate organisations, into whether women and girls have been coerced into sexual activity with obtaining housing as the object, and to press government to address far more equally the masculine side when it heaps blame on young mothers and feckless women. Consideration should also be given to men and boys entrapped into becoming fathers when they had no wish to.
