In the News: 48 Hour Tube Strike Called Over Three Days

The RMT today announced that further strike action will be called on London Underground totalling 48 hours in the dispute over pay and nightube. Drivers will not book on for any shifts from 9pm on Tuesday 25th for 24 hours, and then a further 24 hours from 9pm on Thursday 27th August. Other London Underground grades will take the same action but starting at 1830; for 24 hours on the 25th and 27th of August.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:

“Our members the length and breadth of London Underground have made it clear that they are determined to protect their work/life balance and not fall into a trap where they will be forced to wreck their home lives in order to comply with the “rosters from hell” which have been drawn up to plug the staffing gaps in the Night Tube plans."

The TSSA and Unite unions have also joined the 48 hour strike.

TSSA - TSSA joins 48-hour Tube strike

London Mayor Boris Johnson should stop playing "Pontius Pilate" if he wants to stop the two 24-hour Tube strikes ahead of the August Bank Holiday, the TSSA warned today.

General Secretary Manuel Cortes confirmed his members would be joining the two day stoppages on Tuesday August 25 and Thursday August 27 called in the dispute over the start of the Night Tube.

UNITE - London Underground’s assurances ‘ring hollow’ as Tube workers pencil in more strikes

London Underground’s failure to give cast iron guarantees over unsocial shift working on all-night Tube services will see over 400 Unite members once again taking strike action unless a breakthrough in talks can be found, it was announced today (Tuesday 11 August).

Commenting Unite regional officer Hugh Roberts said: “London Underground’s vague assurances over work/life balance and unsocial shifts ring hollow and don’t go far enough in giving our members the security they need to plan their home life over the long-term."

The planned action has been widely reported in the media too.

The Guardian - London Underground workers to stage two more walkouts

London Underground workers are to stage two further 24-hour strikes as the dispute over all-night tube services continues, the RMT union has announced.

It said the walkouts on 25 and 27 August will take place because London Underground management, under the direction of the city’s mayor, Boris Johnson, are continuing to stall over the issue of work-life balance and job cuts arising from the new rosters, due to come into effect from 12 September.

BBC News - Two more London Underground walkouts announced

London Underground workers will stage two more strikes in the dispute over night Tube plans, three unions said.

Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT), the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) and Unite union members will strike about work-life balance and job cuts with September's night time tube.

The Independent - Two further 24-hour underground strikes announced for August

London Underground workers are due to stage two more 24 hour strikes in August, the RMT union announced on Tuesday - claiming it's members had "no option but to strike again."

"Staff are angry that their grievances are being ignored and dismissed by both the Mayor and his officials and that there has been no substantial move as of today from London Underground to make progress towards a negotiated settlement," Mick Cash, leader of the RMT, claimed.
