What is a National Executive Committee decision?

This article is an 'executive decision' which has been written by the RMT National Executive Committee. The National Executive is the union's governing body in between AGMs. Its decisions set out what the union will do on a particular issue.

These decisions can often be brief, and may be one of several passed over a period of time. To get a better understanding or find out more information about what the RMT is doing, speak to your rep or attend your branch or Regional Council meeting.

BREAKDOWN IN INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS – SERCO DOCKLANDS (DLR/14/2)

Following a meeting of the General Grades Committee regarding the above, the following decision has been taken: -

“That having consulted our representatives, and the report from our lead officer in respect of talks with the company. Despite minor concessions, management continue to press ahead with unacceptable proposals on a series of issues. Furthermore there has been a serious failure to consult with this union before impositions of terms and conditions.

The General Secretary is therefore instructed to ballot our Serco Docklands members for strike action and action short of a strike as soon as practicable.”

Subsequently a further decision was taken with regard to the dispute which is as follows: -

“Brothers Julian Harper and Ian Peavot have been sacked after management unearthed work related comments on Facebook in circumstances that can only be described as intolerable.

Further to the GGC decision on 16th November 2010 to ballot our members over the breakdown in industrial relations, the General Secretary is therefore instructed to include the unfair dismissals of brothers Julian Harper and Ian Peavot in this dispute.”

Preparations are currently being made to hold this ballot in line with the above decisions and I shall keep branches advised of developments.
