Campaign Against Climate Change – Trade Union Conference 7th March 2009,

Climate Change is an issue that should concern us all. On 7th March 2009, the Campaign Against Climate Change, to which RMT is affiliated is organising a national conference for trades unionists. Venue: Kings College, London

At what should be an interesting conference seminars, debates and workshops are planned on a series of issues including sustainable transport and whether coal and nuclear power have a role to play in a low carbon and sustainable future.

Registration at the conference is £10.

Political Representation

This resolution, proposed by DLR branch, was defeated at the February meeting of the Regional Council.

Although we have a very pro-active parliamentary lobby group of 40 to 50 MPs, they can be hopelessly outnumbered (about 6-1) by MPs guided by other interests and influences.

In stark contrast, trade unionists alone outnumber those in power.

But the potential for us to become the meat and muscle on the skeletal political and democratic frame is far from being realised – a situation that benefits the powerful and greedy immensely.

Loss of Earnings When Representing Alsthom Members.

This resolution, proposed by LU Fleet branch, was defeated at the February meeting of the Regional Council.

Within the L U Fleet Branch there are no problems representing members who work for Tube Lines and Metronet. However there is often a problem with appropriate representation where Alsthom is concerned, especially when it comes to the more difficult areas where a more experienced rep is necessary.

Stop the Royal Mail Sell-Off (Rip-Off)

Dear Colleagues

There has been a lot of news in recent days about the proposed 30% sell-off of Royal Mail to a private concern, the most notable forerunner being TNT. This is a company most notorious for it's strike breaking antics at Rupert Murdoch's Wapping plant in 1986.

TNT has a track record of cutting jobs to boost profits and works on the basis of 10 part-timers to one full-timer to cut costs.

In the last 9 months of 2008 the postal service made £225 million profit whilst TNT's profits have collapsed.

London Underground needs to end damaging cuts

ENDING DAMAGING staff cuts, bringing all of London’s Tube back into the public sector and getting the network’s upgrade back on track are more important than the name on the managing director’s door, London Underground’s biggest union said today.

Responding to news that LUL chief Tim O’Toole was stepping down, RMT said that the damaging policies being imposed on the network needed to be reversed.
