RMT's Action Against Assaults campaign

Dear colleague,

The RMT's Action Against Assaults campaign was launched at this year's AGM and is aimed at tackling the unacceptable level of violence faced by public transport workers at work.

Activity in support of this campaign is ongoing and has included the Union putting demands to employers for proper protections at work, as well as campaigning for proper staffing levels and against BTP cuts.

As part of our campaign, we are calling on the Government to introduce stronger legal protections for public transport workers who are assaulted at work through the creation of a standalone offence.

The Crime and Policing Bill is currently making its way through Parliament having completed its second reading in the House of Lords last week.

We are urging the Government to amend this Bill to create a standalone offence of assaulting a public transport worker at work, mirroring the new standalone offence for retail workers it is creating through the Bill.

We need to urgently garner as much support for amending the Bill whilst it is still in Parliament.

If you have not already done so, please will you write to your MP today and ask them to put their name to our open letter to the Government calling on them to amend the Bill.

Please use this online action to write to your MP today - it only takes a couple of minutes.

If you have any questions, please email actionagainstassaults@rmt.org.uk.

Yours sincerely,

Eddie Dempsey
General Secretary
