RMT Tube Drivers to Boycott Dangerous New Procedures

RMT General Grades Committee decision:

That we note the result of our ballot of our London Underground train driver members is as follows:-

Total votes cast: 463
Number voting “Yes”: 369
Number voting “No”: 93
Spoilt Papers: 1

We congratulate our members on the 80% majority vote for action, showing their determination to resist management’s attempts to dilute important safety procedures. We therefore instruct our driver members:

  1. Not to co-operate with the new procedure, and to use the previous procedure, for carrying passengers over shunt signals.
  2. Not to co-operate with the new procedure, and to use the previous procedure, for reversing a train.
  3. To follow procedures at platforms appropriate to the category of that platform prior to the imposed recategorisation of platforms.
  4. Not to follow the imposed procedure to override the sensitive edge equipment and proceed with just a visual check on the S stock on the Sub-Surface lines.

This action to start from 00:01 on Friday 28 October and continue until further notice. We instruct the General Secretary to immediately notify London Underground Ltd of this action, to reiterate our demand that the company withdraw these procedures, and to remind management that we remain available for talks to resolve this dispute.

We instruct the General Secretary to ensure that members are provided with all the information and support they require in order to carry out this industrial action, including:

  • Ensuring that appropriate officers and representatives are present in depots to provide advice and support
  • Ensuring that all depot noticeboards contain clear advice and information
  • Sending a personal letter by post to all driver members explaining this action
  • Circulating a list of platform categorisation that we are instructing members to adhere to
  • Responding promptly to enquiries from members and representatives

London Transport Regional Council and all branches with London Underground members to be advised.
