RMT Internal Structure Review - Branch Input Concludes

From RMT General Secretary Bob Crow - 11th July 2013

Under Item No. 41, the 2011 Annual General Meeting adopted a resolution to commission an independent review of our internal structure and to report back to the 2012 Annual General Meeting with any recommendations deemed necessary. Due to the proposals regarding a merger between RMT and the TSSA, this matter was postponed while discussions took place.

Following confirmation that an agreement could not be reached for a merger, the original AGM resolution was placed back before the Council of Executives. A decision was taken to invite the responsible heads of department from Warwick, Keele and Salford Manchester Universities to attend a meeting to discuss how the resolution could be taken forward.

Following this process, the matter was referred to the Organisation, Training and Education Sub-Committee who submitted the following report:

“That we note that we have had three professional academics that have made presentations to the Council of Executives, but believe this would be better served by the General Secretary collating this information.

The General Secretary is to write to all Branches and Regional Councils advising that we are seeking their views on all structures of the Union, including Branches, Regional Councils, the Council of Executives, Regional Officials, National Officials, Grades Conferences and Advisory bodies, which is not an exhaustive list. We give until 1st November 2013 for initial replies.

Council of Executive members are to give reports to all of their Regional Councils as an integral part of their report.

Any changes which the Council of Executives considers will have to go to an Annual General Meeting or Special General Meeting.

Finally, the General Secretary is to place this item before our Advisory Committee bodies of the RMT.”

The Organisation, Training and Education Sub-Committee report was noted and adopted by the Council of Executives under Decision No. CEww, June 2013.

  • Branches should now have submited initial views on structures of the Union as this part of the review concluded on the 1st of November 2013.
