Update: RMT/TSSA Merger Talks

RMT Council of Executives decision:

That we note the correspondence from the TSSA dated 20th February 2012 on this matter where they state that they “see no further value in continuing merger talks at this time”.

We also note in the correspondence a proposal by the TSSA of a “creation of a federation that should also be opened to other similar sized transport unions”.

It is also noted that our request to the TSSA of a joint meeting of our Council of Executives has been met with the response of that due to “the difference between our negotiating positions remains so intractable that they see no merit in holding a joint meeting of our Executives”.

The General Secretary is instructed to respond in writing to the TSSA stating our disappointment at their position considering the constructive discussions that have taken place between our organisations and in particular that the RMT entered into these discussions in good faith and with openness with the aim of reaching the aim of a merged transport union that would be in a stronger position to protect our members from the continuing and future attacks on jobs, pay and conditions. In this respect, the General Secretary is instructed to inform the TSSA that we still remain available for constructive discussions (in line with our previous decisions and Rule 1 (3)).

Referring to the TSSA proposal of a creation of a “federation”, we refer this matter to our 2012 Annual General Meeting in order that this matter is debated by our Supreme Governing Body with a view of progressing this matter further.

Reference decision CExxx 19th January 2012, the General Secretary is instructed to write to all Regional Council Secretaries and Presidents explaining our position.

Further, a personal letter to be sent to all our members outlining our position on this matter. A membership form to be included with this letter to assist with recruitment.

Regional Councils and Branches to be informed.
