RMT contribution rates for 2025

Dear RMT member,

RMT CONTRIBUTION RATES FOR 2025

Like most things, the cost of providing you with the benefits of RMT membership increases every year and, in most cases, will result in an increase to your contributions to help us maintain and improve those benefits and our services to members.

Noting the high rate of RPI inflation in recent years, general increases in the cost of living and the fact that many of our members had been subject to employer and government imposed pay freezes, your Union implemented the following measures to assist our members:

From 1st January 2022, the full contribution rate increased by 10p per week (1.9%), rather than the September 2021 RPI of 4.9%.

From 1st January 2023, contribution rates were be frozen at 2022 rates until 31st December 2023 (rather than applying the September 2022 RPI of 12.6%).

From 1st January 2024, contribution rates were increased by 16p per week (3%), rather than the September 2024 RPI of 8.9%.

With the announcement of the September 2024 RPI (2.7%) and noting that inflation has fallen, having considered the Union's income, expenditure, and membership levels, the full contribution rate will increase by 15p per week (2.7%) to £5.71 per week.

The table below provides a summary of the new rates with effect from 1st January 2025:

Direct debits will be amended accordingly, as well as contributions collected by employers under paybill deduction arrangements. Members who pay contributions to cash collectors may obtain up to date information by contacting the Membership Department at this Office or by emailing membership@rmt.org.uk

Members who pay their contributions by cheque or postal order directly will need to adjust the amounts they send accordingly.

Members will be eligible to pay our low rate if their basic salary is less than £24,964 per annum.

In instances where a member's basic annual salary rises above £24,964, they are required to be transitioned to our Full Rate in stages (under Rule 2, Clause 16).

A short guide to RMT's Rules regarding membership contributions is available at https://bit.ly/48pACLS which summarises the rates that may be payable depending on a member's current circumstances and any changes arising thereafter.

Noting the decisions taken by your Union to keep contributions at affordable levels in recent years, I am sure you will agree that this small increase of 15p per week to our full contribution rate represents excellent value for money and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to you.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Lynch
General Secretary
