What is a National Executive Committee decision?

This article is an 'executive decision' which has been written by the RMT National Executive Committee. The National Executive is the union's governing body in between AGMs. Its decisions set out what the union will do on a particular issue.

These decisions can often be brief, and may be one of several passed over a period of time. To get a better understanding or find out more information about what the RMT is doing, speak to your rep or attend your branch or Regional Council meeting.

POLITICAL ITEM

RMT POLITICAL STRATEGY

Referring to Decision NWW, 8th March 2018, your Political, Transport Policy and Liberation Sub Committee submit the following report,

“That we note that following our discussions with the Labour Party last year and our subsequent decision to raise a series of issues with the Labour Party as requested to do so by the 2017 AGM a further meeting with the Labour Party took place on 7th March 2018.

Following those discussions we received a letter from the Labour Party dated 13th March 2018 inviting the union to affiliate to the Labour Party and a response to the issues we have raised and these are contained in a document entitled the “RMT Labour Party affiliation discussion paper.”

We instruct the General Secretary to immediately begin the consultation with Branches and Regional Councils on affiliation to the Labour Party as determined by the 2017 Annual General Meeting to enable a report back to a Special General Meeting to take place not later than 1st June 2018.

To ensure that this consultation is properly informed we issue Branches and Regional Councils the “RMT Labour Party affiliation discussion paper” document and emphasise this document is for RMT members only.

Branches and Regional Councils are urged to respond to the consultation and hold special meetings as necessary and we encourage the widest possible involvement of our members.
We ask Branches and Regional Councils to respond by no later than Friday 18th May and we will hold a special meeting of the NEC on Monday 21st May 2018.
