RMT to Campaign for Taxi Scrappage Scheme

RMT General Grades Committee decision:

We note the resolution from our London Taxi branch. Following the Mayor’s imposition of a 15-year age limit on taxis, it is essential that taxi drivers are given assistance to continue working and are not driven out of the trade by the financial demands of the age limit policy. We believe that there should be a scrappage scheme similar to that for private cars, under which taxi owners can ‘trade in’ their aged vehicles towards the cost of a newer replacement. If the Mayor is, as he claims, genuinely committed to improving air quality, he will agree to this scheme and obtain funding for it.

We therefore instruct the General Secretary to:

  1. ask our Parliamentary group to submit an Early Day Motion on this issue
  2. write to the current Mayor, and to all candidates for Mayor, asking their views on this proposal
  3. contact appropriate organisations that campaign on environmental and/or public transport issues, asking for their support for this demand
  4. launch a petition or postcard campaign in support of our call for a taxi scrappage scheme

This matter to be placed back in front of us in the event of any developments. London Transport Regional Council and branches to be advised.
