RMT Anti-rail Cuts Campaign Targets Clapham Junction

Rail union RMT , along with the Battersea and Wandsworth TUC, will be holding the latest in a series of anti-rail cuts demonstrations and public meetings next week, distributing postcards and leaflets and engaging with the public at Clapham Junction Railway Station between 5.30 and 6.30pm on Wednesday 26th March 2014 with a public meeting later in the evening at 7pm at the PCS HQ building at 160 Falcon Road right next to the station.

Speakers at the public meeting include,

PETER PINKNEY (RMT NATIONAL PRESIDENT)

JOHN MCDONNELL MP (CONVENOR RMT PARLIAMENTARY GROUP)

BOB BARRON (BWTUC)

LEONI COOPER (GLA LABOUR GROUP)

Supporters from the travelling public and other anti-cuts campaigns are expected to join the union and the trades council and swell the numbers as RMT Wessex Region sends out a resounding message against the cuts as well as getting the message across about the devastating effect the proposals will have on services and safety and promoting the case for public ownership

The McNulty Rail Review, endorsed by the Government as their policy, would kick guards off the trains, close ticket offices and remove safety critical staff from the tracks in the name of protecting and increasing the profits of the private train operators. The RMT/Trades Council campaigning at Clapham Junction is part of the national fight against the proposals.

RMT Senior Assistant General Secretary Mick Cash said:

“The plans to carve up our railways under the cloak of the McNulty Rail Review would see the quality and safety of rails services out of Clapham Junction and across the Wessex Region hammered into the ground. The public would pay ever-increasing fares to travel on unsafe and overcrowded trains on a faceless railway where profit is the only game in town.

“That is the message we will be taking to the people to Clapham Junction next week – stop the McNulty rail cuts and back the fight for public ownership.”
