What is a National Executive Committee decision?

This article is an 'executive decision' which has been written by the RMT National Executive Committee. The National Executive is the union's governing body in between AGMs. Its decisions set out what the union will do on a particular issue.

These decisions can often be brief, and may be one of several passed over a period of time. To get a better understanding or find out more information about what the RMT is doing, speak to your rep or attend your branch or Regional Council meeting.

Executive decision: Fares Increases

We note the resolution from our London Transport Regional Council, and agree with its sentiments.

Transport providers - in London Transport and elsewhere - charge exorbitant fares while often providing substandard services, which can lead to abuse and assault against our members. While claiming that they "can't afford" cheaper fares or better pay and conditions for our members, the companies continue to pay fat-cat salaries and bonuses to their top bosses and allow private companies to cream off obscene profits. Fares should be substantially lowered, funded through public subsidy raised by taxing the rich and big business, and ending fat-cat payouts and private profiteering.

We reaffirm our commitment to cheap (or free), safe, reliable, publicly-owned public transport, and believe that transport workers and passengers have a common interest in fighting for this. We instruct the General Secretary to publicise this policy, including by issuing public statements opposing fare rises when they happen in future.

We instruct the General Secretary to obtain the legal advice requested in the resolution from the LTRC, as to whether there is any legal redress against specific unfair practices by companies regarding fares.

We refer this issue to our Southern Sub-Committee for further examination and report about additional campaigning we can carry out regarding London Transport fares.
