'Demonstration against Condor Ferries who pay workers £2.35/hour; 12hr days, 3 months at sea.

In your opinion do you think it is fair for an employer operating between Portsmouth and the channel islands to pay £2.35 per hour for workers employed on these vessels for 12 hours per day for up to 3 months away??

A demonstration has been called to highlight to the public and the wider trade union movement the effects of social dumping, which is a global disease that has effected seafaring in Britain to the brink of extinction. Great Britain had over 30,000 seafarers in the mid 80's with the figure now less than 5000 and the average age in the late 40's so not a very bright future for the youth.
Foreign nationals are being exploited by rich shipowners, who can "flag out" and employ nationalities on wages in line with their economy and not in line with the waters in which they trade. An example of such is that I Diana's are currently on 75p per hour on P&O cruises, Ukrainians earn £2.35 per hour at condor ferries. The demonstration is opposed to shipping companies exploitation of seafarers and to highlight the legislation and not against the seafarers, it's the system that's wrong and the morals of shipowners in a quest for greater greed!! A level platform for all to compete irrespective of race or nationality, not a free fall to the bottom is the objective!'
