Union Fights For Cleaners 'Dignity, Respect and Security'

TERMS AND CONDITIONS – CLEANERS – TRANSPORT FOR LONDON CONTRACTS (LUL/14/2)

A resolution was received from our LU Engineering branch concerning our cleaning grade members working on London Underground. It raised a number of issues affecting the whole grade such as the following

  • Free Travel
  • Sick Pay
  • Zero Hours Contracts
  • The use of immigration laws and fingerprinting to intimidate members.

The General Grades Committee has this resolution and agrees that these issues must be raised in order to secure dignity, respect and security at work for our cleaning members. It also noted that an LU Cleaners grade meeting took place on 19th May 2014, attended by a national officer and executive member to assess where we are with the union’s campaign. It was stressed that an organising and recruitment campaign needs to take place within the cleaner grade and that the London Transport Regional Council should be fully involved in order to take our demands forward.

A training day is to be arranged for reps from all cleaning companies on LU with organising as its focus. The GGC has stated that it will fully back the efforts of our Regional Council and its “Cleaners Grade Committee”. The GGC has also noted the imminent publication of the RMT cleaners grade charter for which it commended the Regional Council and Cleaners Grades Committee as a tool to build and organise our members in the spheres of influence of the LTRC.
